[:RU]It turns out that the idea of ​​flying «Volga» appeared long before the film «Black Lightning». It’s about a GAZ-16 — one of the most fabulous development of Soviet engineers. Development of the next experimental terrain vehicle with aerodynamic trucks began in 1960 at the Gorky Automobile Plant under the leadership of chief designer AA Smolin. To the project were involved and a group of employees from the US and aviation plant named after Ordzhonikidze. The new car was to combine the positive qualities of the car and hovercraft. That is, to be economical and passable.

For driving on paved road in the GAZ-16 used conventional chassis with independent front suspension, similar to that used on the GAZ-21. Under the hood was installed eight V-twin engine from GAZ-13 «Chaika» volume of 5.5 liters and output of 195 horsepower. On a flat road car developed a speed of 170 kilometers per hour. Off-road gear were retracted hydraulically driven, and the car was driven by an air bag with two superchargers, soaring to a height of about six inches above the ground. The first version of the car was built without the use of propellers. The driver controls the flow of air from the main fan with special shutters. The second and more known modification flying «Volga» — GAZ-16A has been substantially modified compared to its predecessor. The car has received two auxiliary propulsion engine motorcycle-type power 28 horsepower each. With driveline they rotate two three-bladed propeller, which were made in the tail section. Later, GAZ-16 received a new upgrades, so in design shops born GAZ-16B. Its main difference from the previous model was the use of a gas turbine engine GTD-350 to drive blower and propellers. Despite the fact that the development could be considered successful-held, its place in real life GAZ-16 was never found, and eventually work on the project was stopped.
